'Best Kaizen Paper' Published in International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences
A paper close to my heart
For 20 years I have been teaching a subject I am in love with - aerospace engineering. It is one thing to love the subject, it is totally another level to teach it to those who wants to learn and make a career out of it. After 20 years in the industry, I can see a worrying pattern developing in the teaching of aerospace. What's even more worrying, not everyone can see (want to see?) the destructive pattern to the negative trend.

Teaching aerospace engineering requires expensive tools and equipment which universities have to purchase. Some of these equipment need qualified personnel with certification to operate them. In addition, these equipment need regular maintenance and servicing to continue using them.
All these mean one thing - universities need to spend a lot of money. And when the economy looks bleak, the problem quadrupled in complexity. These equipment soon become liabilities to the university and worst, students who were supposed to use them for their paid courses could not because the equipment couldn't be serviced or no qualified personnel could be employed due to lack of available funding.
A test was conducted to 'break' this pattern in 2017. Using fundamental Principles of Kaizen, the deadlock which lasted for more than 7 years was broken. Focusing on 'moving forward' and 'striving for continuous improvement', Kaizen principles encouraged our minds to look beyond the problem and take creative actions to tackle these dangerous trends and turned it into a positive case-study.
